Looking back, it’s been a pretty swell month for photography. From the typhoon damage through the Chusok flooding, mercurial Mother Nature provided a feast for the lens while the especially vibrant street scene was an ebullient foreground.
I evaluated this set of images not solely by the yardstick of photographic worth but also with consideration to the power of each scene. In other words: the scenes captured often far outshine my photographic means. But this site is, after all, about Korea – not promoting myself as a photographer.
- The most popular image on Pictures of Korea!
- These two working together was touching. I wish I had a better shot.
- Banana vendor brings a tropical flavor to Jongno
- The golden moment when everyone is staring
- A side-long glance, a handful of cash. (Garak Market)
- I hope this Haechi can protect Gwanghwamun from any further relocation projects.
- An uprooted tree and a torn up sidewalk are a strong visual for nature's wrath
- The girl in the front row, "in the zone"; the hipster white girl; the high-school girls clapping in unison; and the primal scream of Hongdae
- The rain beating down on the metal instruments was a percussion performance in itself
- Everyone at this Hongdae spot seemed to be frozen for just an instant
- This kids asked a passerby to capture their jump shot. I got it as well
- Just the posturing tells it all. This mother and daughter were staring each other down in Mapo
- This Korean marine was heading across the street in Shinchon to meet his buddies
- His expression was physically a frown but felt like a smile. I also like the single box of light effect
- The expressions of these kids and the lighting made this shot from Gangnam a keeper
- This kid was swinging from the handles like monkey bars
- Heading out of town for the holidays, I spotted this family on Line 1
- I captured her face right between two drops of water sliding down the window during the pre-Chusok deluge.
- Caught this dynamic duo at a market in Inchon
- The normally bustling Yonsei main gate is nearly abandoned -- save for this man and his cell phone.
- The disgusted expression of the baby is what I love about this unintentional anti-smoking shot.
- The pose, the poise: what's not to like?
- This family in Myeongdong provided an almost commercial-looking image
- I've seen so much street proselytizing recently -- it's like they're following me around. This man seemed to have temporarily lost the "passion of the Christ"
- This shot in Myeongdong captures the intensely packed feel of the streets in the district
- Seoul Tower peeks through the gap of an installation piece at the War Memorial
- Shot this 15-second exposure of World Cup Stadium from across the bridge with a makeshift tripod.
- So many of the epitaphs here were moving. With the modern skyscrapers in the background in the twilight, I especially like this shot.
